Preventing Burst Pipes This Winter

To ensure that water flows freely through your pipes this winter, take a look at our simple winter care tips to prevent frozen pipes in your home.

Get Insulated

Insulate loft and sides of water tanks and wrap them in lagging (a foam material that insulates and reinforces them). You can buy this in most DIY stores.

Keep Out the Cold

Open any cupboards or loft doors on very cold days to let heat in.

Check your frost protection thermostat is working properly in very cold weather by leaving your heating on a low setting (or set to come on a few times a day), especially if you're going away.

Find Your Stop Cock

Make sure you know where your stop cock is and check that you can turn it off easily in an emergency.

Check Pipes Regularly

If you are going away for a while, ask a friend or relative to keep a check of your heating regularly to make sure no pipes have frozen.

Maintenance is Key

Make sure to re-washer any dripping taps - if they freeze they will block your pipes.

Make sure all your gas appliances are serviced every 12 months, for your own safety as well as their efficiency. You wouldn't run your car for years without servicing it would you?!

If you haven't got regulator thermostats then have them fitted. They're a great way of controlling each room's temperature individually and save you money.
